- About Us
With profound sadness we announce the passing of Horace Melvin Hickerson at the Elk Valley Hospital in Fernie BC on Tuesday, February 26th 2019 at the age of 92. He was born in Fort Frances on August 12, 1926 to William and Helen Hickerson and was the eldest of 10 siblings - whom he loved dearly his whole life. Horace and his wife, Lily Fae, would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 30th. Horace and Fae raised their family in Atikokan, Ontario before moving to Fernie, BC in 1981.
Horace’s family always came first and foremost in his life, and his leadership and strong sense of family values lives on through his family. He was known by all for his calm, kind and wise demeanor. He always had a strong commitment to service and community which included service in the army from 1944-45, being president of the Atikokan Ontario Kiwanis club and his 25 years plus in the Fernie Elks.
Horace was known for his work ethic both in his early career as a car mechanic, and throughout his extensive career in mining in both Atikokan (Caland Ore Mines) and later with Line Creek Mine until his retirement.
Horace loved spending time in the outdoors and enjoyed many years with his family both at the cottage at Eva Lake, Ontario and the cabin at Suzanne Lake, BC. Horace was an avid canoer, curler and golfer. He always had a dog by his side at home and out in the bush. He instilled a deep love of the outdoors in his children, grandchildren and extended family who will deeply miss him. Horace was fortunate to travel around the world with his wife and family including trips to Mexico, Texas, Japan, Alaska and Australia.
Horace is survived by his sons Christopher (Desiree) of Cranbrook, BC and daughters Leslee (Michael) of Fernie, BC & Jennifer of Brisbane, Australia; brothers Bill Hickerson and Frank (Frieda) Hickerson; sisters Florence Kemp, Donna (Willie) Opie and Lois Topping; sister-in-law Mabel Hickerson; grandchildren Lorne, Nathan and Rae-Lynn, Kaarina and Sami, Shelby and Jessie, two great grandchildren Matthias and Kaiden, as well as many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his son Delbert, parents William and Helen Hickerson; brother Edward Hickerson; sisters Jessie Enge, Irene Alex, Shirley Ford and foster sister Dolly.
A private family service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC or to a charity of your choice.
