Russell WASWICK Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Russell H. Waswick, who peacefully departed this life on April 28, 2025, at the age of 77 in Fernie, BC. Born on June 25, 1947, in Fernie, Russ was a loving husband, devoted father, and cherished grandfather.

Russ led a life full of rewarding twists. He spent over 25 years at Kaiser Resources until 1992. After the company underwent a major transition, he founded his own venture, Total Maintenance. His pride in beautifying his clients’ homes was evident as he often pointed them out during his evening cruises. In quieter seasons, he expressed his creativity by crafting exquisite woodwork.

Russ was predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years, Sharon. He leaves behind his son Rob (with partner Leah), his daughter Sandy (with partner Chris), and his pride and joy, grandchildren Zoey and Avery. In his early years, he was surrounded by siblings; though he was predeceased by John David and Verna, he is survived by Susan, Pauline, Doug, and his lifelong friend Joey (along with Stef, Derek, and Dawn). Russ had a remarkable way of embracing others—earning him affectionate titles like “Popps” to Hugh Tennant and the hospital staff, “Grandpa Russ” to the Ridgemont children, and “Uncle Russ” to many.

A true community man, Russ was born and raised in Fernie and dedicated countless hours to the Fernie Lions Club. Along with Sharon, he played an instrumental role in the local Scouting movement and was immensely proud of the eight boys he mentored, especially when they achieved the Chief Scout Awards in Ottawa. Every camping adventure was shared with neighborhood kids in tow. Later, when they traded tents for a comfortable motorhome, they spent many years at Castle Cove in Waldo, building cherished memories and campfire traditions like the legendary “magic fire.” As an Alderman for the City of Fernie for two terms, he took pride in the positive changes he helped create. After launching his business, he became known for his spirited community engagement—together with Sharon and Hugh, he would dress up as Santa to visit seniors throughout town with a basket of goodies, leaving everyone to wonder who was behind that infectious “Ho Ho Ho!”

Russ will be remembered for his genuine smile, deep empathy, and eternally upbeat nature.  Please join us in celebrating his life on Friday, May 9, 1PM at Cherished Memories.
