Robert HUTCHINSON Obituary

Robert “Rob” Hutchinson passed away peacefully at his home in Hosmer, BC, surrounded by his family on March 25, 2025, at the age of 81 after a long battle with cancer.

Robert is survived by his sisters, Sue and Margaret, and brothers Stan, Cliff (Joyce), Tom (Tony), David (Joan), Cindy, Earnie, and many extended relatives; sons Arthur (Jackie) and Kevin (Stella); grandchildren Jessica, Austin, Jared (Natalie), and Tessa.

Robert is predeceased by his parents Bob, Nettie, and Lavern; beloved wife Elsa; siblings Harry and Larry.

Robert was born on September 7, 1943, in Fernie, BC, and was raised in Hosmer, BC, on the family farm. Robert’s early years were filled with farming, forestry, and mining as a heavy equipment operator. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a proud member of the Fernie Elks for over 50 years.

Robert met his wife Elsa at a café that she was working at in Coleman, Alberta. The two then married, and a short while later their oldest son Arthur was born, followed by Kevin. Robert loved his sons and valued their time together, whether it was working on the farm, taking Kevin to hockey practice, or butchering and packing this year’s meat. We must not forget Robert always appreciated a good prank. Robert loved being a grandfather and was always talking about what his grandkids were up to.

Robert always had a farm full of vibrant and entertaining animals, some of these being a pony named “Bubbles” (named after his granddaughter Jessica’s first word as a baby), peacocks that would roam around Fernie more than they were in the coop, alpacas, and exotic chickens—basically anything he could get his hands on at the “odd and unusual auctions.” It wasn’t called “the funny farm” for nothing.

Robert was well known in the Fernie community, and many looked to him whether it was for a good laugh, a coffee at McDonald’s, or a load of firewood.

Robert loved his animals, small and large. His German Shepherd puppy, Lady, and Calico cat, Peaches, never left his side as their bond was unbreakable.

Robert will be remembered by his contagious laugh as it could brighten anybody’s day. You will be greatly missed.

Robert’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the doctors and nurses in Fernie, Cranbrook, and Kelowna for their continuous care and support. We would also like to thank Rob’s friends and family who have shown overwhelming support throughout his time of need.
