Melvin MARCELLUS Obituary

“Don’t worry about the future, for the present is all thou has. For the future will soon be the present, and the present will soon be the past.”

-Quote found among Mel’s papers, origin unknown

Melvin (Mel) Marcellus passed away at his home in Grasmere, BC on September 21, 2024, after losing a long battle with lung disease.

Mel was born in Winchester, Ontario in May 1954. He moved to the West Coast in 1972 where he gained employment painting cars at the local body shop before settling into his 30-year career with Overwaitea (Save-On Foods) which eventually moved him, his first wife Sue and their sons to Fernie, BC as Produce Manager. He loved his role at Overwaitea and within the community, taking great care with his customers and forming many long-standing friendships. He was a presence in the store and took special care with elderly folks. Mel was a Boy Scout leader for many years which enabled him to take his sons on many adventures. Upon retirement, Mel and his second wife Kerry, made their home in Grasmere, BC with a small hobby farm where they had cats, birds, chickens, fish, and his beloved donkey Oscar.

Mel was a carefree spirit who didn’t like to play by the rules. He held many strong opinions and was not shy about sharing them. He was passionate about life, the enjoyment of it, and he cared very deeply for the people and things that he loved. He enjoyed ice fishing, gardening, watching sports plus having a beer and a smoke in his happy place: “The Shop.” Mel’s green thumb and love of horticulture gave him the powers of a plant whisperer.

Mel is predeceased by his parents Hugh and Marion, along with his brothers, Barry, and Larry. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kerry, of 27 years; sons, Jesse, and Cody; stepchildren, Kristina & her partner Chris, Cory & his wife Brenda; step grandchildren, Sybil and Will; sister, April Dawn; niece, Makaylah, and constant companion, Bonzo the cat. He will be missed by many dear friends and family including Sue Marcellus & John Pallone, Jim Huth, Brian Clerihue, Geoff Whitley, Giddy Cass, Jerry Murray, and others.

As per Mel’s wishes, there will be no funeral services. A small private memorial will be planned at a later date.

The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Stuckey, Rob & Joanne Woods, Barb Taylor and all the folks at Overwaitea and community for all their help and support over the years.
