Maria ALTOMARE

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Altomare early Monday morning June 16, 2025, at Poplar Ridge Pavilion in Trail, B.C. with her family at her side.

Maria was a devoted sister, aunt, teacher, and cherished friend. Although she began her teaching career in Kimberley, B.C. she spent most of her professional life teaching French at Sparwood Secondary School to generations of students. Maria retired after a meaningful career and is remembered for her warmth, patience and deep commitment to her students.

Maria was a devout member of the Catholic church, where she was also a dedicated member of the choir. Her gentle spirit, generous heart, and unwavering kindness enriched the lives of all who knew her.  She had a passion for travel, and visited many places in Europe, the Caribbean, the USA and Canada. 

Maria was predeceased by her parents Joe and Armida Altomare. She is survived by her sister, Christine Souza; brother-in-law, Tony Souza; brother, Mark Altomare; sister-in-law, Debbie; nephews, Christopher Souza and Ryan Furber Altomare, and Robyn, Kruz, Maddy, Jaxon and many other beloved family members and cousins. 

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the Trail and Sparwood hospitals and dialysis units for the compassionate care over the years. 

A service to celebrate Maria’s life will be held at St. Michael’s Church in Sparwood on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 10:30 am.  All who know and loved her are welcome to attend. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Foundation or other charity of your choice. 

Rest in peace, Maria. You will be greatly missed.
