Maren THIESEN

Maren Thiesen was born Maren Rasmussen Feb 2, 1926 in Denmark. She was the 5th child of 13. She came to Vancouver BC Canada in 1957 and worked as an RN with polio patients. She was a devoted, competent, alert practitioner who loved her career.

In 1959 she married Aage Christiansen Thiesen and raised two daughters with him. She is survived by Linda Thiesen of Tsawassen BC and Karin Wardle of Fernie BC. (Aage sadly left us in 1990). Also, by her adoring grandchildren Finn, Kaya, Valerie, Janice and Ian.

Maren’s main focus in life was the welfare of others around her. You could never sit at a dinner table with her and have your plate empty. She would always offer you her own food before even thinking about eating without you.

After leaving her nursing career she had a daycare home where countless children were looked after in an attentive caring loving home atmosphere. All of these children had an amazing childhood because of Maren’s care. She also was always aware of the needs of her neighbours. The family lived in a very diverse neighbourhood of East Vancouver with every household being represented by a different nationality: Hungarian, British, Scottish, Portuguese, Malaysian, Swiss, Italian, Chinese, Irish, ….it truly was a United Nations neighbourhood. Many of the neighbours were elderly and they were well taken care of by Maren and her husband. She was a member of the Danish Lutheran Church in Vancouver and served there as well. She made sure her daughters learned to help out with serving the needs of others.

Maren loved to make people laugh and never took herself seriously. She never worried about her own needs but would be deeply troubled by the concerns of others. One of her guiding principles was: “It’s so important to be good to each other in this life.”

She passed away Jan 20, 2020 at 93 in Fernie BC. Plans for a memorial service are still being determined. They will be late February or early March. They will be in Fernie.
