John “Yuncho” Robert Halko passed away peacefully with his wife and family at his bedside on September 19, 2024. He was born on June 15, 1944 in Michel, BC.
John was predeceased by his son, Brian, parents, John and Susie, and brother Thomas. He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Marjorie. He is survived by his daughter, Leanne; granddaughter, Sophie; daughter-in-law, Gail; grandsons, Dillan, and Zachary; sister, Julie (Robert) Craig, sister-in-law, Wendy (Ray) Allen, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
John and Marjorie were married in the St. Michael’s Church in Michel Natal on September 17, 1966. He worked for Crowsnest Forest Industries until the sawmill moved to Elko. He then went on to start a career with the District of Sparwood until he retired in 2002. In his early years he served as a volunteer firefighter with the Sparwood Fire Department. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. You could also find him foraging for mushrooms and berries on his many rides in the bush, often coming home with a load of wood. He was also a passionate gardener who loved tending to his plants in the greenhouse and ensuring his yard was well kept.
At John’s request, a service will not be held.
The Halko family would like to thank the dedication of the many Home Support workers who aided him over the past few years, as well as Dr. Rader, Dr. Stimson, the caring nurses at the Elk Valley Hospital, the BC Ambulance Paramedics, and the Sparwood Fire Department. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in his memory are appreciated.
