Jack Buchanan succumbed to his battle with Alzheimer's Disease on December 31, 2021 at Rocky Mountain Village in Fernie.
Jack was born in Fernie in 1933 to Horace and Catherine (Rushcall) Buchanan. He is predeceased by his brother Raymond. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Sheila (Quail) Buchanan, his daughters Shelley (John) and Heather (Doug), and 5 adored grandsons: Bryan (Alexandra), Colin, Matthew (Aleisha), Andrew (Chloe), and Liam (Emily). He will be missed by many relatives and friends including his nephews Keith, Brian, and Glen Buchanan, Greg Stewart, Sandy Cervo, and the Snell family.
Ironically Jack was a “jack of all trades.” As a teenager he delivered groceries for M C Cash Groceries. He worked as a bookkeeper for many local businesses including Coal Creek, Michel, and Natal Mines. Jack went on to get an accounting diploma and an electrical certificate. After working for Westar Mines, he ended his career as the maintenance and building supervisor at Trinity Lodge.
Jack was a fierce competitor, whether it was on the ball diamond, curling rink, ski hill, or golf course (two “holes in one”). He brought his competitive spirit to the card table where he enjoyed playing bridge, poker, and crib. Jack delighted in passing on his competitive nature to his grandsons in sports, games, and driving lessons. As his little buddy Thomas said “Jack loved to tell stories and jokes.” Jack loved the solitude of fishing and berry picking. He had a kind heart toward children and dogs.
Jack was a devout Anglican and a lifetime member of the BPOE 81 (Elks) Lodge. He was a former member of the 3300 Club and the Fernie and Jaffray Golf Clubs. Jack and Sheila enjoyed travelling but his favourite vacation spots were Kalispell Montana and Rosen Lake.
The family would like to thank Dr. Soetaert, Dr. Rodrigue, and the amazing staff at Rocky Mountain Village. A special thank you to the people of Fernie who showed kindness and compassion to Jack during the past few years.
The next time you are playing a game or petting a dog - smile and take a moment to remember Jack.
The family will have a private graveside service at a later date.
