It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we announce that David Franklin of Elkford, BC passed away on September 3, 2023, surrounded by family in Fernie, BC after a long and courageous battle with dementia. David John Franklin was born in Kingston, ON March 27, 1950 to parents Kenneth and Barbara (Sexsmith) Franklin.
David was predeceased by his parents, and his sister Angela. He is survived by his wife Madeline Barbara (Bilenduke) Franklin, sons Gaelan Franklin, Chad (Catherine) Franklin, and Christian Franklin, grandchildren Carter and Chaya Franklin, his brother Steve Franklin, and puppy Kiah Sophia and kitten Sariah who protected and loved him in his declining health.
When David was in his late teens he enlisted into the Canadian Armed Forces (Reserves) where he served his country proudly for 3 years (even meeting the Queen). In 1974 David was set up on a blind date by Fish'n Canada Royalty Angelo and Reno Viola. His date walked in, saw him, and left. He followed her out the door and as she walked away, he said to himself, "I'm going to marry that girl!" A short while later he asked her to the dance, kissed her under the mirror ball, and they were married two and a half months later. They lived in three different provinces before settling in beautiful British Columbia where they would discover and put down roots in Elkford in 1979.
David worked at Fording River for 18 years before embarking on the exciting adventures of long-haul trucking for most of the rest of his career, with a short stint in the oil patch for 4 years. He retired in 2015 due to his health.
His Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 11th, 2023, at Teck Hall in Elkford. Viewing will take place from 10:00 -11:00, followed by a service at 11:00. David will be interred at the Mountainview Cemetery immediately following the service.
If you can, we would love for you to come and celebrate David’s life with us.
