Brian MERRETT Obituary

Daryl and Delee were heartbroken to learn of the unexpected passing of our brother, Brian. He was much loved and respected by us both. He was 66 at the time of his death and had lived in the Elk Valley for 43 years.

Known as Bummer to life-long acquaintances, and as Dad to dog Dory (pictured at left), Brian was born in Regina as the middle child of Mary and Len Merrett. The family home was at 1066 King Street. Brian went to Wascana elementary school, where he formed several life-long friendships, and then to Scott Collegiate.

Mary, Len, and Delee came west in 1976, settling initially in Hosmer, and then in Morrissey in 1978. Brian left Regina to join them that same year. He was 23 at the time.

Mary and Len passed away in 1984 and 1990 respectively. In 1995, Delee moved to Creston, and Brian relocated from Morrissey to Fernie, where he lived in the same apartment for the remainder of his life.

Some older Fernie residents will remember Brian from the Fernie Esso, where he worked for many years. More recent acquaintances may remember him from his walks with Dory and the occasional informal gatherings that took place at “the log” by the river.

Brian was shy, unpretentious, sensitive, patient, and kind, a keen Rock music fan, a compassionate animal lover, a loyal friend, and a good brother.

Sadly, Brian lost his closest Fernie friend, Jeanna Brown, in April 2015, and his pal Dory in September 2018. Both losses hit him very hard.

He is survived by his two siblings – Daryl in Victoria, and Delee in Creston. Farewell, Brian. Until we meet again.
