Allan VERCH Obituary

Allan Verch, a larger-than-life figure known for his complex personality, passed away on October 27, 2024, in Fernie, BC just 20 days after the passing of his wife, Susan, on October 7, 2024: shy of their 54th wedding anniversary.

Born in Cranbrook, BC, as the eldest of three brothers, Allan grew up around logging camps before heading to the west coast in search of something more. He worked various jobs, including as a fisherman and butcher, but found his true place as a coal miner in the Elk Valley, where he raised his family.

Allan is remembered for raising his two sons, Travis and Rory, to be self-reliant outdoorsmen. He had a passion for horses and was an active participant in the local rodeo circuit as a team roper. His love for the outdoors was a significant part of his life, and he instilled that appreciation in his children.

A proud grandfather to Kaden, Jaidyn, Temperance, and Brynnan, Allan was never shy about sharing his opinions on their activities and competitions. He enjoyed following their endeavors, often asking for updates and eagerly waiting for photos and videos.

Allan was a complicated man. He had a large group of friends, yet his brusque demeanor and blunt honesty often left people wondering how he managed to keep them around. He could be generous, sometimes to a fault, giving away what was not his to give. His knack for performing for an audience—whether they wanted it or not—was both entertaining and bewildering.

Though he was no saint, Allan had a way of leaving a mark on those who crossed his path. He will be missed, not for being perfect, but for being unapologetically himself.
