Alice Leona CAMERON Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Alice Leona Cameron on September 13, 2024, at the age of 74, after having fought a brave fight with a terminal illness.

Alice was born in Wetaskiwin, AB. and attended Wetaskiwin Composite High School. Throughout her working years, Alice lived in both Edmonton and Calgary, and enjoyed positions as a courier driver, an artisan candle-maker and an administrative assistant. She loved the outdoors and escaped to the Kananaskis for camping trips and cookouts whenever she could, providing wonderful childhood memories for her nieces, nephews, and her only daughter Lee Anne who would often bring her best friend Cecilia Sanchez.

Alice moved to the Elk Valley in Southeastern BC in the 1990’s and those who frequented the Christmas craft sales at the Greenwood Mall in Sparwood would have seen her expertise as a knitter, as knitting was her favorite hobby.

Alice was one of the first people in Western Canada to receive a cochlear implant after suffering from hearing loss mid-career. In later years, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. She met both challenges with courage. Thank you to Natalie and Karen at the BC Cochlear Implant Program in Vancouver, her homecare family in Sparwood and the nursing team from Interior Health services. A special thank you to her friend and caregiver for ten years, Stuart Smith, who was family to her and with whom she shared many memories and good laughs over the years.

She was predeceased by her father Ralph Hay (2014), twin sister Arlene Lily Hay (1950), brother Norman Hay (2020), and friends Ron Cameron and Molly Ksionzena. She is survived by her mother Ella Hay, her daughter Lee Anne Stark, her grandchildren Jessica Stark and Alex Stark, and many nieces and nephews. Also left to mourn are her many dear friends, of whom include, Betty Lynn, Stuart Smith, Linda Smith and Jennifer Ksionzena.

Alice was a caring person who showed her love in practical ways. With a warm smile she would offer a helping hand to others, give her delicious baking at Christmas time, or gift her remarkable knitted items such slippers, scarves or sweaters to loved ones.

All who knew her were blessed by her kindness, genuineness, humour, and firecracker quick wit.
