Douglas QUAIL Obituary

Doug passed away on Friday, March 8th, 2019, in his 92nd year.

Doug lived a full life, defined by family and the many relationships he developed while in Fernie and beyond.  Doug now joins his beloved wife Wilda (nee Penman) of 65 years, who predeceased him in 2018.  Doug leaves to cherish his memory his son Bruce (Donna), his daughters Sandra (Mel) and Sharon, his grandchildren Gordon, Samantha (Mark), Britney (Will), Katelyn (Matt), and Jacob, and his sister Sheila (Jack) and brother-in-law Rick.

Born in Fernie, British Columbia, Doug worked for his father in a building supplies business before moving to Vancouver to pursue his degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia.  While in Vancouver, on a date set up by mutual friends, he met Wilda and they danced the night away.  They never looked back as they knew they were meant for each other. They married a year later, on July 25th, 1952.

Doug’s career in engineering took them to Ontario, where he managed bulk fuel facilities and tanker truck delivery services.  He also designed fuel pumping and gas stations.  His travels with work took him throughout Central and Eastern Canada and the Maritimes.  He regaled about the welcoming people and the beauty of the countryside. This was typical; Doug always carried an appreciation for the people and communities he touched.

In 1969, Doug returned to Fernie, where he took over Quail Builders Supplies. He was dedicated to the business and to the town.  The business prospered, success based on his extensive knowledge and experience he willingly shared, a broad range of inventory, and long hours. He was passionate about the town.  A long-time Rotarian, he helped initiate and fund civic improvements locally, and he and Wilda opened their doors to exchange students from afar. With the Fernie Chamber of Commerce, he volunteered to strengthen commerce. With the Salvation Army, he manned the kettle. With Knox United Church, he helped maintain the building and the boiler, and kept the books.  Doug led by example.

Upon retiring, Doug travelled with Wilda, taking trips around the world.  Many of their trips were taken with their travelling companions Mary and Spar East.  Yet there was no place like home.  Doug always held a fondness for Fernie and for Rosen Lake.  At his cottage at the “lake”, Doug spent many joyous summers hosting family, entertaining, and tending to his garden.

Throughout his life, Doug readily “accumulated” friends.  He had a natural and honest interest in others, was ready to engage in conversation, and shared a joie d’vivre.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 19th at the Knox United Church at 1:00 PM.  A reception will follow.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Todd Loewen, the Fernie Home Care team, and Fernie hospital nurses for their support and caring.

Donations in Doug’s honour may be made to The Salvation Army Fernie or a local charity of your choice.
